As our society prosperous and become more gracious, the number of abandoned animals also seems to be increasing. I am not sure of this curve and the linkage behind it but it seems like the more gracious we are, the more cruel or realistic we are. People begin to abandon animals for alot of reasons:
1. To avoid paying for the hefty medical bills when their pet are sick (but hey they are your best companion isn't it and all the more you should try your best to save them? To me, this is the most irresponsible group of people and yes inside my heart, i am secretly hoping that you will get the same retribution some day)
2. They no longer find them adorable (all of us aged, animals as well. Does it mean that when they aged and are no longer in their puppy look, you can have the right to abandon them? will you also abandon your kid when they grow older?)
3. When their newborns are sensitive to the animal fur (even when you have a reason like that, it doesnt give you the right to abandon your animals, the least what you can do is to ensure they have a good home, visit them occassionally to see how they are coping.)
4. Unable to cope with their hyper activeness, the character of the pet (the moment you decide to buy an animal, you should know its a life time committement and having a puppy/kitten is like having a kid. When they are young, you will need to tend to them alot, you need to train them to pee/poo at the correct place, you need to cook for them, bath them, feed them, bring them down for walks. But well, thats about all, at the very least, they dun ask you for money.. they dun throw tantrums when you refused to buy them toys.. And if you think that having a children is an investment and you hope that they will be able to look after you when your are old, then you have a very wrong mindset, with inflation and standard of living raising, there is no way they can afford to look after you when you are old. So from an investment point of view, can i say that your investment will be a flopped? I believe they would rather buy themselves another CHANEL than to pass u the money. :) So if you cant handle or do not have the committement and ability to look after an animal, then please do not buy them, they are not a toy and cant be given away lightly.
5. You are just lucky to have many friends and families, but they only have you. So if you are not ready, dun even start.
6. Do not overcommit. I know some of you have big houses and can buy a few big dogs. But do not over commit. I have come across a few owners who own a few big and well groom dogs but was not able to keep them when they shift to a smaller house. To me, you can still be able to keep one when you shift, there isnt any need for you to give all up. Everyone keep saying they need to give them up cos no space for them to roam, but in actual fact, how much space is considered enough? Do you really think that the pet will roam and walked up to your 3 level house everyday? At the end of the day, just bring them down for enough exercise or a long stroll by the park, i believe that will be sufficient. I often see big dogs at big houses just simple laying there and they are usually brought for a long walk around their estates. Some of my neighbours also have big dogs and the dogs looks super fine to me. But of cos they are considerate, they bring the dogs for walks at a later time to avoid a collison with the kids.
7. I do not expect everyone to agree with what i said or to love animals as much as i do but i do hope the animals owners out there can all cultivate responsible pet ownership. If you really have no choice but to give up your pet, at least help them find a nice foster or adopt family. do not just throw them on the streets and let them fend for themselves. It will cause more harm to them.
These are just some of my sudden thoughts. Anyway, if you are keen to adopt or have lost any dogs, you can refer to this blog, they often help to advertise on these issues. http://therehomers.blogspot.com/
